WHAT IS AN ASANA?
An Asana literally means ‘’a seat’’. But what is the essence of an Asana?
In Sutra 2.46 Patanjali famously teaches us:
STHIRAM SUKHAM ASANAM
Meaning: posture is that which is firm and pleasant (as translated by Swami Vivekananda)
In Iyengar Yoga, We aim to find alignment in the different Asanas in order to experience them as FIRM and
PLEASANT.

WHY DO WE USE PROPS IN IYENGAR YOGA?
“The same props can be the cause of freedom as well as bondage. It depends upon how and why you use them as
well as for whatr reason”

IS YOGA A PHYSICAL WORKOUT?
‘’Though Yoga is often considered in the west to be only physical, it is also a physio-psychological and psycho-
spiritual subject. It is a science which liberates one’s mind frm the bondage of the body and leads it towards the
soul. When the mind reaches and merges with the soul, the soul is freed and remains thereafterin peace and
beatitude. If a bird is kept in a cage, it has no possibility of movement. The moment the cage is opened, the bird
flies out and seizes its freedom.
Man attains that same freedom when the mind is released from the bondage of the body and comes to rest on
the lap of the soul.’’

GEETAJI ON INHALATION AND EXHALATION (IN PRANAYAMA FOR BEGINNERS)
This ‘’space’’ factor itself is a big study. It is rather a subject of meditation. The inhalation reveals the space and a
feel of fullness is experienced. The exhalation reveals the space and a feel of emptiness is experienced. Learn to
face both corageously. The fullness and emptiness, both lead towards completeness.’’
